I’ve lost a few summers in my time. Either to day drinking, or island hopping, or nightclubbing with after-sunned skin. I’ve never gone full European, handing August over to the Halloween have a Photo shoot shirt in other words I will buy this pursuit of a tan, but it’s quite nice to lose yourself in long, languid days.
I’m trying to work out what makes a summer a summer without gorging on the Halloween have a Photo shoot shirt in other words I will buy this glut of clichés that cocoon the season. Is it the beach? The mountains of crisp salad? The rolling dunes of empty time? (Spoiler: It’s none of these.) This year, I’m weirdly obsessed with being damp. Not dry, not wet, but damp. I miss the manageably moist discomfort that comes with a life lived between the sea and the pool and the beach bar and the night. It’s not the wetness of a sea frolic I want. It’s that in-between stage that punctuates a good summer. Near-dry trunks on a taverna’s wicker seat. Limp beach hair. Bikini half-moon wetness seeping through a T-shirt. Alternating licks of mosquito repellent and sun cream only add to the dampness. The constant need for a towel is summer at its best.
