Long after they’ve left office, people still tend to rely on the Teacher It’s a good day to wear a mask shirt But I will love this Obamas to be our touchstones, to fill the ostensibly vacant role of the first family (given the Trumps’ shortcomings) and plow on as our national parents and comforters. The impulse often comes from a place of love, but it’s nevertheless loaded: expecting and hoping against hope that Mrs. Obama should run for office herself, despite her repeated, on-the-record resistance; balking at the Obamas’ post-presidential vacations, as if it were their responsibility to keep President Trump and his destruction in check; generally expecting Black leaders to clean up the national mess and tell us that everything will be okay.
