“There were two main reasons I decided to volunteer, the Dairy Cows Life shirt moreover I will buy this first being that I’ve read so many horror stories about workers in Southern states turning people away when they’re perfectly able to vote. Most of the voter suppression in Tennessee comes in the form of voter roll purges and thrown-away applications, but I figured I should still do my part on Election Day. Second, I remembered that almost all of the poll workers I’d seen previously were well over the age of 60, which poses a problem when you have to closely interact with hundreds of people during a pandemic. I wanted to help fill the spot left by those who couldn’t—and shouldn’t—work on Election Day. On the actual day, we were given all sorts of PPE; no one donned the paper gown, but most of us wore a mask/face shield/gloves combo. The county also set up a completely touchless voting experience where we used paper trays to slide IDs back and forth and voters used coffee stirrers to make selections on the machines (supercheap and surprisingly effective). We had far fewer voters on the actual day than normal, in part because of weeks of early voting and the new ease in voting by mail. Usually, Tennessee is very strict about who can utilize absentee ballots, but for this election they allowed anyone with worries about COVID-19 to vote at home. Unfortunately, the Tennessee Supreme Court overturned a ruling allowing mail-in voting for the November general. It’s definitely worrying to think about how many people benefited from absentee voting in August and whether they’ll feel safe enough to vote again in the fall.” —Colleen Kemp, 22, poll worker in Nashville

“I knew someone who worked with the Dairy Cows Life shirt moreover I will buy this board of elections in my county, and I knew they were looking for people to help work the general. I just graduated college in May, and I’m in grad school right now, but I was still just looking for pretty much anything to do. I’ve always been pretty fascinated with voting and the power we have as citizens (as lame as that sounds), even if as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that voting can only go so far in terms of making lasting change. When I was a kid, I would get excited to go vote with my parents and they would let me come in the booth sometimes and pull the lever for them, and I’m always the one at Thanksgiving and family gatherings being annoying and yelling at everyone to make sure they’re registered to vote, so I think I really had a lot of curiosity as to how it all works. This is my first time doing this, so I don’t have any experience actually working a polling place yet, but the training session I went to was pretty interesting. I was definitely the youngest person there, by far. They mostly went over logistics, like how to set up the polling place, how to check people in and look up names, how to count ballots, et cetera, but it was pretty cool to see how many people are taking this really seriously.” —Alex Parker, 21, poll worker in Suffolk County, New York
