I’ve spent most of my career divided between work in the Official I Don’t Hoard Fabric I Just Stop Faster Than I Quilt Shirt but in fact I love this racial equity space and work around grief and loss. I’m a Black woman who lost a mother 12 years ago and a pregnancy last summer. When I’m not helping people and myself move through the world with a better understanding of how grief actually works, I’m fighting for Black lives. I fought for them in the White House and as the Managing Director of President Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper Alliance. I now run a boutique consulting firm focused on building a more equitable world; an America that actually lives up to the ideals this nation was founded upon. This spring, my two previously separate worlds collided when suddenly Americans began to understand that Black lives don’t really matter, and the collective grief we experienced thanks to COVID-19 was suddenly magnified.
At that time, I felt called to respond to the Official I Don’t Hoard Fabric I Just Stop Faster Than I Quilt Shirt but in fact I love this grief and pain that my community was experiencing. I also felt called to support my husband. Nearly a decade ago, I met a scientist in a bar for a drink. I thought he seemed interesting, and I appreciated that unlike so many people in D.C., he didn’t care about what I did for a living, as long as it made me happy. We have always supported one another professionally, but from a distance. We understood little about what each other did and we’re both OK with that. Matt had been taking some time off from work and was figuring out what he wanted to do next when COVID-19 began to dominate headlines. I should add that in addition to being a scientist, he is a microbiologist and has spent his entire career in working in a laboratory. Because he is who he is, he felt compelled to return to work and has been supporting COVID-19 testing for a local county with a focus on underserved communities.
