I never imagined in a million years that I would be running a newsroom where our top story is on Black sororities and the Scuba Diving Everything will kill You so choose something fun shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this role they historically played in suffrage for women of color in this country. That is just a fucking fascinating story, and it’s a story that has been largely absent. It percolated out of a woman on our staff who attended a historically black college who was in a sorority, and it’s just a storyline that a newsroom full of privileged white women never would have come up with.
I want to talk about your culture, because I’ve worked in women’s media for a while and unfortunately, there can be hypocrisy. I wrote a big sexual-harassment report and the Scuba Diving Everything will kill You so choose something fun shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this president of the company where I worked was a deeply inappropriate man. Or women are writing stories about how to ask for a raise, but not getting one when they ask their own boss. How do you create a culture that lives up to your values?
